PLEASE NOTE:

Why We Proudly Call it a "Sun Barrier Cream" (And Skip the Fancy SPF Label)

At Sons of the Land Co, we build products rooted in simplicity, heritage, and real-world honesty.

We’ve had plenty of folks ask us if our non-nano zinc barrier cream is going to get an official, laboratory-certified SPF rating. The short answer? No. The longer answer is that we refuse to play the corporate game at the expense of our values—and your wallet.

To get an official "SPF" number in Australia, the government requires cosmetic brands to hand over roughly $20,000 to $40,000 to clinical laboratories. This money funds mandatory medical-grade trials involving testing on human subjects, alongside massive administrative fees. For a small, independent business like ours, that is a massive financial hurdle. If we paid it, we'd have to double the price of our cream just to make that money back.

We don't need a multi-thousand-dollar piece of paper to tell us what we already know. We formulated this cream using thick, non-nano zinc oxide—a natural, physical reflector that sits on top of the skin to block out elements like wind, moisture, and harsh UV rays. We use it on ourselves, our kids, and our mates. We know 100% that it works because we live it.

More importantly, our cream isn't a single-use chemical lotion. It's a hardworking, multi-purpose remedy designed for life on the land. It heals chafing, calms irritated skin, and shields sensitive little bums as a heavy-duty nappy balm.

By keeping it unlisted by the TGA and calling it exactly what it is—a Sun Barrier Cream, not a "sunscreen"—we save tens of thousands of dollars in medical laboratory testing. We pass those savings directly on to you, keeping our formulas pure, raw, and affordable. We don't need a fancy regulatory stamp to prove our worth. The results speak for themselves.

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. No sunscreen or barrier cream can block 100% of the suns rays. SPF 30 rating can be translated to sun protective factor of 97% of UVB rays for a period of time calculated. For instance if you start to redden in the sun after 10 minutes and the sun protection cream allows you to stay out in the sun 500 minutes longer before you 'redden' then the cream will be given a rating 10/500 = 50 aka SPF50

Factors that affect the Sun Barrier Creams efficiency, the UVA/UVB rating on the day, water and snow can increase reflection of rays thus increasing your chances of 'burning', being in water or sweating can affect its ability to stay on the skins surface thus affecting its ability to provide a barrier. Being closer to the equator can increase the sun rays, thus increasing your ability to burn.

(Please note: whilst Coconut is not classed as a tree nut, if you have a diagnosed nut allergy seek guidance from your practitioner and if you've never used natural Beef Tallow, Kakadu plum oil or coconut based products please test patch first).

HOW TO PREVENT SUN BURN-

Use common sense

If it is the middle of the day or the UVB rays are high or you are swimming or sweating- cover up and seek shade where possible OR reapply frequently (more than every two hours and use a THICKER LAYER (Yes, we know this means you will see more of the white non-nano Zinc, however it is a small compromise for reducing your chances of burning)

For any other time of the day or use, apply every two hours and a thin layer will suffice.

For example: I am a PE Teacher, on the days I am out doors for long periods at a time, especially during summer months I apply at least twice daily, a thin layer. When I take my family 'Boating' and we are in and out of the water and in the sun all day, we apply a THICK layer so that we can see the Zinc at all times and the second we can't see it we reapply, which may mean we apply up to 4+ times a day. If the kids are playing on the bank of the river, in sand and mud, we ensure they have a THICK layer on whilst ever they are in the sun.
