Frequently Asked Questions
What actually is Beef Tallow? Tallow is rendered fat (suet) from grass-fed cattle. It has been used for centuries as a traditional skin healer. Because it closely mimics the molecular structure of human skin oils (sebum), it absorbs deeply and nourishes more effectively than water-based or synthetic lotions.
What are the main ingredients in your creams? We believe in "less is more." Our base formulations consist of 100% Grass-Fed & Finished Australian Tallow and Organic Coconut Oil. Depending on the blend, we also incorporate high-quality botanicals like Kakadu Plum Oil or pure essential oils—never synthetic fragrances or fillers.
Is this safe for babies and sensitive skin? Absolutely. Our brand started because of our son Finn’s struggle with eczema. We designed our Natural Tallow Cream to be gentle enough for the most sensitive skin, including nappy rash, cradle cap, and dry patches.
Can I use Tallow on my face? Yes! Many of our customers use it as a nightly moisturiser. It’s packed with Vitamins A, D, E, and K, which act as a natural "liquid bandage" to repair the skin barrier and reduce redness without clogging pores.
Will it make my skin feel greasy? A little goes a long way. Because tallow is bio-identical to your skin’s own oils, it is recognised and absorbed quickly. If your skin feels greasy, you may be using too much—start with a pea-sized amount and massage it into skin for best results.
What is the "Sun Barrier Cream" and how do I use it? Our Sun Barrier Cream is a zinc-based natural protector designed for those who spend their days on the land. It provides a physical barrier against the elements while the tallow base keeps your skin hydrated under the sun.
Can I use the Tallow Cream on acne-prone skin? Yes. It sounds counterintuitive to put "fat" on acne, but tallow is non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores). It contains antimicrobial properties and stearic acid, which helps repair skin and can actually balance your natural oil production. Give it at least a week for your skin to calm down after the change to using tallow.
Where do you source your Tallow? We are proud to source our tallow from Australian farmers committed to sustainable agriculture and 100% grass-fed and finished cattle. Our dream is to eventually breed our own cattle right here in Lake Bathurst, NSW, to oversee the process from start to finish.
How do you process the Tallow? We use a low-temperature wet rendering process. This ensures that the heat doesn't damage the delicate, bioavailable nutrients and vitamins (A, D, E, K) that make tallow such a powerhouse for your skin.
Does the cream smell like beef? Not at all. Through our careful rendering and whipping process, we achieve a very mild, neutral scent. In our scented blends, we use pure essential oils for a clean, natural aroma that won't irritate your skin. Note: everyone's sense of smell is different and therefor may have a slight smell if you are sensitive, pregnant or never used natural products. For most customers they don't report a smell and if they do its a result of the blended oils.
How should I store my Tallow products? Keep your jars in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Because we use zero synthetic stabilisers, the texture can soften in high heat or firm up in the cold—this is normal and a sign of a truly natural product!
What is the shelf life? Tallow is naturally shelf-stable. Our products typically last 12 months. We recommend using clean, dry hands when scooping from the jar to keep your cream fresh. We believe you'll use it all up well before the 12 months as you'll love it so much!
Is Sons of the Land Co. an Indigenous-owned business? Yes, we are a family-owned business and proud members of the Daby mob (Kandos/Rylstone, NSW). Our brand is a tribute to our sons’ heritage and our deep connection to the land.
Can I find Sons of the Land products in physical stores? We are primarily online, but we occasionally pop up at local markets in the NSW region. Follow our journey on social media to see where we’ll be next!
